This sailing ship, originally known as VL 74, has a long and fascinating history. Built in 1903 in Vlaardingen, Holland, she was a typical two-masted sailing ship that was primarily used for fishing in the North Sea. At the time, she was seen as a practical and reliable vessel equipped with a logger-tackle, and was used by seafarers and salesmen alike.
As time went on, the ship’s history followed the typical path of sailing ships – her machinery was updated, her rig was modified, and she underwent several name changes. Despite this, she managed to survive both world wars and continued to sail under four different flags throughout the 20th century.
In the early 2000s, the ship was given a new lease on life when it was purchased by a Finnish owner. The decision was made to restore the ship to its former glory as a sailing vessel, and the massive undertaking began. The ship was stripped down to its hull, gearbox, axle, and propeller, and everything else was rebuilt from scratch.
After much consideration, it was decided that the ship would be rigged as a two-mast gaff schooner, a classic design from the ship’s era. The rigging was completed during the winter of 2001-2002 in Pietarsaari, Finland, and the ship emerged as a true beauty. Today, she sails under the Finnish flag and is a stunning example of a classic sailing ship.
